In short

  • Shinonome is a two-storey house in the Rokuhara area of Higashiyama, Kyoto, with 3 bedrooms; it sleeps 6.

  • Keihan Kiyomizu-Gojo Station is about 6 minutes' walk, and Gion-Shijo is one stop north.

  • On foot, Rokuharamitsu-ji is 3 to 5 minutes away, the Kamo River 6 to 8, and Kiyomizu-dera 20 to 25, the last stretch uphill.

  • A taxi from Kyoto Station takes about 10 minutes and costs about ¥1,200.

  • Shinonome is a notified home under the Private Lodging Business Act, number M260068443.

Shinonome has a desk on the ground floor that faces the street, so after a day in Higashiyama there is somewhere to sit down and open a laptop.

What follows is how the house works, then where you can walk and ride from Rokuhara.

Layout: two floors, two toilets

The ground floor has a Japanese-style living area, a dining area, the kitchen and that street-facing desk. The bath has a shower and a tub, with a small courtyard garden behind it, and there is a separate toilet, two washbasins, and a washer and dryer.

Upstairs are three bedrooms. The large tatami room takes three futons and has shoji rather than blackout curtains, so morning light comes in; the Western-style room has a double bed; the small tatami room sleeps one and opens onto the Western room through a sliding door, which lets a family with a young child sleep close together. The same floor has a second toilet and a washbasin.

Guests who find stairs difficult can ask ahead for up to two futons in the ground-floor living area. A cot and a high chair can also be borrowed on request. There is no television.

Within walking distance

Rokuhara is a residential area, and several of Higashiyama's temples and shrines are within a walk. By the host's own timings, Rokuharamitsu-ji is 3 to 5 minutes away, Miyagawa-chō 5 to 8, the Kamo River 6 to 8 and Kennin-ji 8 to 10.

Further out, Hanamikoji in Gion and the Yasaka Pagoda are each 12 to 15 minutes, Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka 15 to 20, Yasaka Shrine 18 to 22 and Kiyomizu-dera 20 to 25, the last part uphill. Convenience stores and places to eat sit along Gojo-dōri and around Kiyomizu-Gojo Station.

The neighbours are local households, so please keep voices low when coming back at night. The same week brought Hinokiya in Mibu and Sanko Townhouse in Kitano, on the west and north sides of the city.

By train and bus

Keihan Kiyomizu-Gojo Station is about 6 minutes on foot. Gion-Shijo is one stop north, and the same line runs towards Fushimi Inari and Osaka; from Osaka, take the Keihan Main Line from Yodoyabashi or Kitahama to Kiyomizu-Gojo.

There are two bus stops. Gojo Yamatooji Higashiyama Kaiseikan-mae is 3 to 5 minutes away, served by Bus 80 to Gion and Shijō Kawaramachi; Gojozaka is 8 to 10 minutes away, with Bus 206 to Gion and Higashiyama Sanjō and Bus 207 to Gion, Shijō Kawaramachi and Shijō Karasuma.

From Kyoto Station, City Buses 206 and 100 run to Gojozaka. With large luggage a taxi is simpler, at about 10 minutes and about ¥1,200. Bedrooms and photographs are on the Shinonome listing.
